Mary and Jim Bennett
Memorial Golf Tournament
The annual golf tournament was originally named in honor of Mary Bennett, who was a Charter Board Member of the Foundation and one of the original golf tournament committee members. She was an enthusiastic and tireless volunteer who died unexpectedly in 2000, with her husband Jim following her in death shortly afterward. Mr. Bennett himself was a Hyland Hills Foundation Board Member, active participant and staunch supporter of the Foundation. Today, the tournament bears both of their names and in further tribute, their two sons, Scott and Mitch, are now serving on the Foundation Board of Directors.
Scott notes that the annual tournament, now honoring his parents, has grown over the past 17 years and become a major asset to the people in the community. He added that his parents were strong supporters of the District. "All of those people stepping up and doing all of that for us is super cool."
Scott said that it is "humbling" that the tournament bearing his parents names is such a successful and positive event for the community. "I don't think I realized when I was growing up how important this was."
The 2009 tournament, held at the Golf Courses at Hyland Hills on July 17th, is the major fundraising event for the Foundation. Monies raised help to fund Foundation programs including the Be-A-Fish Learn to Swim Program, Hyland Hills program scholarships for low-income children, and the purchase of an activity bus for Hyland Hills Park and Recreation District.
